KAOHSIUNG D.U.I. — ONE ROAD, ONE HOUR, NINE ARRESTS … ON A TUESDAY NIGHT!!

Red Brick Daily Anti-drunk driving campaigns are not apparently having much effect in the south, with a report from Tuesday (actually, the early hours of Wednesday, November 29, 2017) detailing police DUI arrests on one small section of ZhongHua (JhongHua) Road. Between 2 and 3 a.m., police nabbed NINE drunk drivers, most on scooters but several car drivers as well. (Both photos show fatal DUI crashes in Kaohsiung in 2017) One suspect attempted to turn around and drive the wrong way on JhongHua Bridge … resulting in a mini police chase. The suspect was found to be under the limit for alcohol, but...

NEW SUN FARM ON AGONGDIAN RESERVOIR

Red Brick Daily ‘A-gong-dian’ means ‘Grandpappy’s shop.’  Completed in 1954, it was the biggest such project since the Japanese era. The reservoir sits on the upper part of Agongdian River in Kaohsiung City.  Stretching across some 2000 meters, it’s reportedly the longest reservoir in Asia!~ (The reservoir features a long bike path and bridge. A park for kids sits below near the main road. Info: Agongdian Reservoir, No.1, Gongcheng Rd., Yanchao Dist., Kaohsiung City  GPS: 120°21’24.85”E/22°48’6.89”N) And now this old water hole is moving into the 21st century, with a new solar farm that opened this week. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu said...

DARK HORSE KAOHSIUNG MAYOR CANDIDATE TAKES TOP SPOT IN TV DEBATE

Red Brick Daily Yep, we’re heading into another election cycle and for a few places, the polls will mean big changes. In Kaohsiung, the 12-year rule of Mayor Chen Chu is coming to an end and whoever replaces her will have big shoes to fill. It’s virtually guaranteed the DPP nominee will win the race in November 2018, but who will that candidate be? Five DPP lawmakers representing Kaohsiung are contesting the nomination, which will be announced around March next year after independent telephone polls confirm a leader. But recent developments are turning conventional wisdom on its head …. maybe. Here are...

KAOHSIUNG SAYS IT’S WORKING ON SIGNAGE, BUT PROGRESS SEEMS SLOOOOOOOOOOW

Red Brick Daily It was once much, much worse. Some roads in Kaohsiung used to have 5 or 6 pinyin spellings … but these days it’s down to maybe two. As you can see from the pics above and below, Kaohsiung still has a long way to go with regard to city signage standardization. Kaohsiung City officials say plans to re-do signs using the now-standard Hanyu Pinyin system used by other parts of Taiwan have already been approved, but work has yet to commence. Hopefully, signs can be fixed as soon as possible to deflect any lingering perceptions that Kaohsiung...

“UH, IT MEANS, HEALTH AND FAMILY … I THINK … “

Red Brick Daily Remember the “Taiwan + DPP Flag On My Face = 15 Seconds of Fame” dude from Kaohsiung? Well, he’s facing judgment for DUI at ‘criminal negligence’ levels and we seriously doubt the inverted Chinese characters inked on his mug will do much to help him in court … esp. as he’s a ROC national (gave up his UK citizenship) and has reportedly served time behind bars previously. To his credit, at least this Kaohsiung alcohol-and-ink-needle enthusiast had a clear message he wanted to impart: “I love Taiwan so much I’ll … YEAH — Get drunk and tattoo my face!”...
