Parents picking up their kids from school yesterday expressed outrage at the decision by the Kaohsiung City Government, which called off school and work from only AFTER 12 p.m. yesterday.
Mayor Chen Chu apologised … sort of … saying, “I would like to be Santa Claus, but there are legal standards for declaring a typhoon day.”
Chen said that, according to weather forecasts, conditions in Kaohsiung yesterday morning didn’t meet the standards for suspending school and work, adding the typhoon was only expected to batter the city from about 3 p.m. or so.
The Tainan and Yunlin County governments also made the same “half-day” call and were likewise chastened by an angry public.
Tainan Mayor William Lai (賴清德) said the city made the decision based on a professional judgement … and asked for ‘understanding’.
Several children and parents were reportedly slightly injured as they picked up their kids yesterday, with many telling TV reporters that if a mega-typhoon is coming, the government should have the balls to call the day off … and not take chances with people’s lives.
