What were the original designers thinking? They built a freeway interchange that forces all vehicles wishing to get on Freeway 10 and Freeway 1 to fight, jostle and struggle through ONE tiny bottleneck known as the DingJing Interchange.
Hop on the freeway from the Kaohsiung HSR Station area at 6 am and you’ll sail through the interchange in 5 minutes. Move that time up to 7:30 am (or any other rush hour) and it can take an HOUR to cover 3-4 kilometers.
This week, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu presided over a ground-breaking ceremony for a new ramp that will finally (hopefully) bring some logic to the interchange … allowing those who want to get on Freeway 10, headed east to QiShan, or north/south on Freeway 1 toward Xiaogang and Tainan, respectivly, to do so without having to get all Hunger Games about it.
To be completed within two years, this much needed change should save drivers untold hours of wasted time, reduce idling pollution, and generally reduce homicidal thoughts by frustrated motorists.
