Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu and other city officials congratulated badminton player Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) for reaching the world No. 1 ranking in women’s singles.

At a ceremony at city hall yesterday, the mayor told Tai that “all residents of Kaohsiung and all Taiwanese are so proud of you.”

Tai won the singles title at the Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships on Sunday, defeating India’s Pusarla Venkata Sindhu.

She will be officially pronounced the World No. 1 female player by the Badminton World Federation next week.

Mayor Chen also presented Tai Tzu-ying with a check for NT$200,000 as a reward for her efforts.
