Taiwan’s Oscar-winning movie director Lee Ang (李安) has recommended a site at the Shalun Farm owned by state-run Taiwan Sugar Corp. in Tainan as a place to build a world-class movie studio.

Tainan Mayor William Lai (賴清德) announced the plan on Facebook yesterday, saying the premier had approved the plan and that Lee had picked the location.

Lee reportedly likes the spot as it has a lot of potential … flat landscapes … accessibility … easy connections to major freeways … and not too far from the Tainan High-Speed Railway Station.

There should be little difficulty in buying the land — which is solely owned by the company — Mayor Lai said, adding that he and Lee Ang inspected the site back in 2013.

In a meeting with the premier earlier this month, Lee Ang proposed Taiwan build a world-class movie studio that will help train and retain local talent, attract international filmmakers, revitalize the film industry … as well as serve as a tourist destination.

They hope to have something tangible within about three years.

Could people one day talk about films from “Tainan-wood” ?
