And we have a winner! The 2016 Asia-Pacific Industry Award is going to the Taiwan High-Speed Rail Corp., (THSRC) for its “smart systems,” according to a report in Taiwan Today.
THSRC won on September 6, 2016, for superior disaster warnings, excellent passenger and ticketing service systems … as well as doing a good job providing integrated i-traveling information.
THSRC – the operator of Taiwan’s 348.5-kilometer high-speed line running from Taipei (Nangang) to Kaohsiung (New Zuoying) – beat out two rivals from Australia and Hong Kong for the honor.
This is the second time a Taiwan company has won.
Last year, Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection Co. won for its Taiwan-developed ‘smart electronic toll collection system,’ which was launched in 2006 as an optional payment method utilizing infrared onboard units … and is now used by every vehicle that gets on a freeway.
Work began on Taiwan’s high-speed rail in 2000 and it commenced operations in January 2007.
About 50.5 million trips were made on the HSR last year, up from 48 million in 2014.
As of year-end 2015, more than 347 million trips have been made on the HSR.
