Taoyuan Metro Corp. — the firm operating the MRT line that will link Taipei and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport — says it aims to launch the 35.7-km service by the end of 2016.

Those who have lived in Taiwan for a while know not to get their hopes up, however, as this line’s opening has been delayed six times … and has taken 10 years to build.

The line, WHEN AND IF it opens … will serve 22 stations between Taipei Main Station to Taoyuan Airport.

While other glitches appear to have been ironed out … speed remains a problem: travel time between Taipei Main Station and Airport Terminal 1 is still at around 36 minutes … falling one minute short of the target.

But the good news is that the 4,522 defects in the MRT system found from October 2015 to February 2016 …. have pretty much been addressed; with the system’s general stability raised from 76 percent in August 2015 to 96 percent in August this year.

Could the line REALLY open by the end of ’16? Fingers crossed!
